The Australian newspaper is celebrating 60 years in print. Rupert Murdoch published the first issue of The Australian on July 15, 1964. 

We wanted a newspaper of intelligence, of broad outlook, of independent spirit and of elegant appearance… a national voice dedicated to the attainment of the highest standards of reporting and analysis.

Today, it is read by 4.091 million Australians across print and digital, according to Roy Morgan data for the 12 months ending March 2024.

This book below, ‘The Australian’ is a pictorial record of the establishment of a great newspaper, designed by News Limited group.

It was given to my father vlad by Maxwell Newton (29 April 1929 – 23 July 1990), he even signed it for him. Vlad worked with Maxwell Newton as a graphic designer, his first job aged 21 for Maxwell Newton Publishing, Canberra in the 1970’s.

Maxwell Newton who was managing editor of The Australian at age 34, was formally managing editor of the Financial Review.

On Monday 15 July 2024 will be 60 years of The Australian- to celebrate The Australian will be publishing a special editorial series, Six Decades in Six Weeks, highlighting the biggest news stories, cultural and lifestyle events, business and sporting achievements and the most memorable pictures and cartoons of the past 60 years, decade by decade.
