Have you noticed everything vintage is new again. Flash back to 1980 when the new development of the Canberra Theatre Centre was established – a new look was formed. Here are the designs and branding Vlad Mosmondor designed for the Canberra Theatre Centre. Its design was simple, effective and still looks relevant to today in terms of logos and design identity. Over the years the branding of the logo has changed.
The look of the Theatre was established now. What’s grand was that a statement piece, an abstract sculpture of Thespis by artist Robert Cook 1965, made in Bronze. It was displayed front and centre of the Canberra Theatre. Later in 2006 the sculpture was relocated to the refurbished foyer of the Canberra Theatre Centre foyer, Civic Square.
Background on the sculpture: Thespis was the legendary originator of Greek tragedy. It shows a reclining human figure representing Thespis, who was reputed to be the first person ever to appear on stage as an actor in a leading role rather than as part of a chorus.
Back in the 80’s Canberra’s population was 223,000. From that time, Canberra has now grown in size to 472,000. Its only natural to develop and expand, and its great to see how far Canberra has come. Especially with the arts community. Its fitting to see new developments emerge, as in recent news there has been talk of a new Canberra Theatre Redevelopment. It will be a world-class destination for arts companies, artists and audiences in the heart of our Canberra Civic and Cultural District.
The redeveloped Canberra Theatre Centre will include:
- a new 2,000 seat theatre, comparable in scale to the largest theatres in Australia
- a major refurbishment of The Playhouse
- adapting the existing Canberra Theatre to become a contemporary flexible venue, able to host a broad range of performances, concerts and events
- significantly expanding the Courtyard Studio to accommodate a diverse range of activity with flexible seating and open plan theatrical space able to host performances and workshops.
